Anxiety disorders go beyond regular nervousness or the slight fear you may feel from time to time. An anxiety disorder occurs when your anxiety levels interfere with your ability to function, your reactions are out of proportion to situations (i.e., overreactions), or you can’t control your responses to situations. Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These are some - but not all - conditions which fall under the umbrella term "anxiety disorder".
Major depressive disorder (MDD), is a mental health condition that causes a persistently low or depressed mood and a loss of interest in activities that once brought joy. Clinical depression can also affect how you sleep, your appetite and your ability to think clearly. These symptoms must be present for at least two weeks for a diagnosis. Bipolar disorder is characterized by mood lability/mood swings. Patients with bipolar disorder experience periods of intense depression alternating with periods of mania or hypomania.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder characterized by an ongoing pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. It is common for all people to display these behaviors some of the time. However, for people with ADHD, the behaviors are frequent and occur across multiple situations, such as at school, at home, at work, or with family and friends. Symptoms are chronic and debilitating, and they may lead to poor self-esteem and other mood disorders when left untreated.
Sleep-wake disorders involve problems with the quality, timing, and amount of sleep, which result in daytime distress and impairment in functioning. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and is closely associated with other mental and physical disorders.
